How do I get rid of bed bugs?
Getting rid of bed bugs can require an experienced and certified technicians educated in bed bug biology, habits, and the correct use of pesticides and alternative treatments like thermal remediation (heat). Although if you do not want to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars in eliminating the problem, you will have to have a go yourself, knowing little about bed bugs and the steps needed to eliminate them will make all the difference. Before you begin here are some things your will need:, Steam cleaner, Diatomaceous Earth
, Bagged Canister Vacuum, Bed bug mattress covers.
Step 1. Place all linens and clothes from infected area in plastic garbage bags and tie them up so that no bed bugs can drop off clothes while moving them to the laundry room. You know want to wash all the linens and clothes through the hot cycle, the hot water will kill the bed bugs along with any eggs. Make sure to dump the clothes straight from the garbage bags into the washer so that there is no possibility to contaminate the laundry room. When washed you will want to run clothes through the hot cycle in the dryer. If you have delicate cloths that cannot be put through the hot cycles then you can place then into the freezer for several hours to kill any bed bugs and their eggs.
Step 2. Vacuum mattresses, box springs, bed frame, electrical outlets, head board, base boards and carpet, paying special attention to corners, seems, and any small cracks, and screw holes on bed frame, head board, wall, and base boards, move dressers/night tables and vacuum underneath, behind, remove drawers, vacuum inside drawers and in drawer bank hollows. It’s important to be meticulous, this will eliminate a substantial portion of the bed bug population. Utilizing a high quality particulate air (HEPA) filtered vacuum with a disposable bag will remove 99% of all allergens related to bed bugs. Remember to remove the filter bag, tie it up inside a garbage bag and thrown out immediately after vacuuming. Do not use vacuum accessories which have brushes or bristles. Instead use the hose alone, this way there will be no chance of any bed bugs getting caught in the brush and re-infesting your home. It’s also wise to examine the housing where the filter bag attaches to the vacuum when removing bag, to make sure no bed bug gets left behind. At this time it would be a good idea to pick up a steam cleaner if do not already have one, alternatively you can use a hair dryer, it will just take a little more time.
Step 3. Now the fun part, slowly start to take apart your bed frame, and head board, steaming all joints and ends as you go. Bed bug and their eggs die at temperatures of over 130° F or 54 .C, so you will want to make sure blast all areas possible with the heat. Now steam clean the mattress and box spring paying close attention to seams and any overlapping areas where bed bugs may hide themselves or their eggs. Now focus on night tables and dressers, blasting all corners and joints inside and out. Steam all base boards along the walls especially areas that have cracks where the bed bugs can get in behind. If you have base boards that are not sealed with caulking now is the time that you will want have it done, if there are any bed bugs farther in where the heat does not reach, then they will be sealed in and not able to get out to re-infect the room, just make sure to caulk the rooms that share the same walls as well. Make sure to steam every little nook and cranny, screw hole and scratch. Missing any one of these can make the difference of be bed bug free or have to start all over again, or spending thousand on pest control company. Remember that juvenile bed bugs and eggs are extremely small and you would not likely see them without help of some type magnification.

Step 4. O.K here is where you will need some Diatomaceous Earth to double up on all the work you just finished. Start to reassemble your bed frame and head board, dust all joints, screw holes and along the frame or lip where the box spring sits. Applying a light sprinkle along the base boards, push bed frame in its place and apply a light coat around the bottom of every post. Put night tables and dressers in place and apply a light coat around bases. Try to leave it as is for a week or two at a time, then clean and reapply. If you have any bed bug mattress covers put them on and place back on frame. Now you’re ready to bring all your clean linens and cloths back in.
Now start over on adjacent rooms and any other area that might be infected with bed bugs. If all this seems to much you can call a Licensed Exterminator, you will want to look for a Thermal Remediation Expert (killing bed bugs with heat) in your area, if there is none then find an Exterminator licensed for chemical treatments, using both Thermal Remediation and Chemical sprays in a larger infestation can be very effective. Make sure to call a few companies and get quotes to compare prices, then you have better footing to work out a good price for your treatment.
